Kenneth E. Johns, Jr.
Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Johns is an attorney practicing in the Dallas, Texas area. He received a B.S. degree in 1967 and a J. D. degree in 1970 from the University of Memphis. After graduation he served in the U.S.A.F. JAGC until 1974 when he joined the firm of Vinson & Elkins LLP in Houston, Texas, a Texas based multinational partnership. He was a partner in that firm until 1999 when he resigned to pursue other business opportunities. During his association with that firm he was Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He is admitted to multiple Federal and State trial and appellate courts and is a public arbitrator for the NASD, the NYSE, and FINRA. He is a Trustee of the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, MA. He previously served as a director of the Liposome Company prior to its acquisition by Elan. Mr. Johns is also Chairman of Helicon's Board of Directors, as well as a director of several private companies.
Tim Tully, Ph.D.
Chief Science Officer
Dr. Tully has studied the genetic basis of memory for his entire career. Dr. Tully discovered that a gene called CREB plays an important role in regulating the conversion of short-term memory to long-term memory. This finding suggested that small molecule modulators of the CREB pathway might enhance memory and, therefore, would be useful in treating memory-related disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. To that end, Dr. Tully helped to found Helicon Therapeutics, Inc. in 1997, where he remains a member of its Board of Directors. Dr. Tully received B.S.s in Biology and in Psychology from the University of Illinois in 1976 and a Ph.D. in Genetics in 1981. He pursued postdoctoral training in NeuroGenetics at Princeton University and in Molecular Genetics at M.I.T. In 1987, Dr. Tully became an Assistant Professor at Brandeis University, Waltham, MA and in 1991 joined the staff of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory as an Associate Professor, became Professor in 1995, The St. Giles Professor of Neuroscience in 2003, Head of the Division of Neurogenetics in 2006 and finally resigned his professorship at CSHL in 2007 to become Chief Scienctific Officer of Dart Neuroscience LLC. He also is an Adjunct Professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing China and at the National Tsing Hua University in Hsin Chu Taiwan. Dr. Tully has published numerous scientific papers and is on the editorial board of several neuroscience journals. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his research.
Daniel Harvey, Ph.D.
Chief Operating Officer
Dr. Harvey has been involved in drug discovery research in both academia and industry for more than 20 years. He received his undergraduate education in chemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara and his Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry from Yale University where he was a Kent Graduate Fellow. After serving as a Miller Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, he joined the faculty at the University of California, San Diego where he was an American Cancer Society Junior Faculty Research Fellow and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. From 2001 to 2008 he held various senior management positions with Discovery Partners International and BioFocus DPI, A Galapagos Company. From 2008 to 2009 he served as CEO of ChemVentures, Inc.
Rod Scott, Ph.D.
Senior Director of Biology
Dr. Scott has been involved in drug discovery research and development for more than 15 years. Prior to joining DNS, Dr. Scott was Director of Discovery Systems at Helicon Therapeutics, Inc. for seven years where he remains as consultant. Dr. Scott also was Senior Scientist at OSI Pharmaceuticals after completing his postdoctoral training in neuroscience at The Rockefeller University. Dr. Scott received his Ph.D. in Developmental Neuroscience from Columbia University and graduated with a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Stirling, Scotland.
J. Guy Breitenbucher, Ph.D.
Director of Chemistry
Dr. Breitenbucher has been active in drug discovery researcher for over 15
years. Prior to joining DNS, Dr. Breitenbucher had roles as head of
Combinatorial Chemistry and head of the Pain Chemistry Department at Johnson
& Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development in San Diego. At J&J, Dr.
Breitenbucher led, or played a critical role on, drug discovery projects
which produced 9 compounds entering preclinical development (NME) and 4
compounds entering human clinical trials. Prior to work at J&J, Dr.
Breitenbucher was a senior scientist at Axys Pharmaceuticals in San
Francisco, where he worked in the combinatorial chemistry department and was
responsible for design and synthesis of large compound libraries for large
pharmaceutical company partners. Dr. Breitenbucher was also a scientist in
the medicinal chemistry department at Bristol-Myers-Squibb in Wallingford
CT. Dr. Breitenbucher received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in chemistry at
California State University at Long Beach and his Ph.D. in organic chemistry
at University of California at Riverside. He then pursued postdoctoral
studies in natural product synthesis at the University of California
Berkeley. Dr. Breitenbucher is co-author/co-inventor on over 70 scientific
papers and patent applications and has served on various scientific advisory
panels and chaired multiple scientific seminar series in the area of
medicinal chemistry.
Brock Luty, Ph.D.
Director of Scientific Computing
Dr. Luty has been involved in applying software engineering and
informatics to the science of drug discovery for over 15 years. After receiving his Degree in Chemical Engineering from Kansas State University, he moved to Houston to study computational methods for simulating biochemical systems. Brock earned his PhD in Chemical Physics with Professor Andy McCammon in 1992 and continued his studies of computational statistical mechanics as a Human Frontiers Postdoctoral Fellow with Prof. Wilfred van Gunsteren at the ETH in Zurich. In 1995,Brock joined Agouron Pharmaceuticals to help develop novel SBDD methods. Brock continued in positions of increasing responsibility until 2008 where he was an Associate Research Fellow in the Computational Science Center of Excellence for Pfizer La Jolla. After a short, but enjoyable, stint as an independent consultant, Brock joined Dart NeuroScience LLC in 2010.
